How To Apply Floor Stain

How to apply floor stain. Just as with a good finish job the first step to a quality staining job is making sure the floor is sanded. Repeat for the entire 3x3 square. Next use a professional quality vacuum with a brush head or a felt tipped head to clean the floor.
Select a stain that won t raise the grain of the wood or you ll have to sand the floor after applying the finish. Allow to dry for one hour. Work from one side of the room to the other frequently wringing out rag or sponge so coverage is even and stain doesn t pool on floor.
Working in 3x3 foot sections apply the stain to the wood in one fluid motion going with the grain of the wood. Dip rag or sponge into stain and apply stain to floor going with the grain rather than against. Start brushing the stain into the edge of the floor along the back wall about a metre to a metre and a half from the corner out then down the other wall along the ends of the boards pictured below.
Clean floor with mineral spirits and a soft cotton cloth to pick up any. Gel stains also minimize blotching. Water based stains emit less odor and clean up with soap and water.
Remove dust with a heavy duty shop vac followed by rags dampened with. Repair obvious defects such as nail holes cracks or gouges in the floor using a wood putty or filler. Apply gel stains to vertical surfaces like window trim and furniture to eliminate drips.
Fills in wood grain after staining for a smooth finish. Follow the grain of the wood. Use a floor sanding machine and edge sander or sand by hand.
