Magnetic Bands On The Ocean Floor
Which bands have female drummers.
Magnetic bands on the ocean floor. Magnetic stripes are the result of reversals of the earth s field and seafloor spreading. Magnetic bands provide evidence of sea floor spreading 1963 in 1963 fred vine drummond matthews and others found that the crust surrounding the midocean ridges showed alternating bands each. New oceanic crust is magnetized as it forms and then it moves away from the ridge in both directions.
The magma can become magnetized before it cools and it aligns. The models show a ridge a about 5 million years ago b about 2 to 3 million years ago and c in the present. As it cools it becomes permanently magnetized in the direction of the earth s magnetic field.
A mid ocean ridge is a long chain of volcanic mountains on the ocean floor with a deep central valley. It was discovered that the magnetic reversals are recorded in bands of rock on either side of a mid ocean ridge. Magnetometers towed near the sea surface behind research ships or mounted on submarines like alvin measure the magnetic anomalies or wiggles that record the changes in magnetization of the volcanic sea floor.
Each band is magnetized with a polarity that is opposite the surrounding bands.
